Basketry: Weaving the Cycle of Life!
Basketry: Weaving the Cycle of Life!
The accompanying picture shows Gog and Magog, the traditional guardians of the City of London protecting the entrance to Guildhall! These two wicker work figures were made by the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers in 2006, and have processed in the Lord Mayor's Show each year since.
This was a fitting entrance, since, to celebrate their 450th anniversary (yes, established a bit before the Scientific Instrument Makers!) the Basketmakers held a celebration of the art of basketmaking at Guildhall on 19th Feb 2019, to which the Master and Consort were invited.
In the magnificent surroundings of the Old Library was presented a show of a stylish variety of pieces for home and garden, including fashion items and works of art, many available to purchase.
Most excitingly to us were the lifelike animals and birds, from a full size horse, to a quizzical owl atop a tree branch - unfortunately just a bit too big to carry home!
The event was opened by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO, and honorary Liveryman of the Basketmakers, and, we are given to understand, a keen craftsman herself.
In line with the Company's motto, 'Let us love one another', the event was a most sociable affair, at which, over drinks and canapes, we were able to renew our acquaintance with so many friends and contacts from other Liveries, including the Lady Mayoress.
Upon leaving, each guest Livery was presented with a copy of their commemorative book - a full history of the Livery, the copy of which I shall leave in our office, if anyone would like to see it.
