On the 29th April, as the Master’s Consort, I accepted an invitation from the Mistress Engineer to a lunch and a talk on the “Magic Breakfast” at the Royal Air Forc
On arrival we were given the chance to take a tour of the impressive Club building which, for those of us who took part was very interesting. Last year saw the centenary celebrations of not only the Royal Air Force but also the Royal Air Force Club. Pictured is one of the impressive stained glass windows.
Gathered together for a glass of fizz we had a chance to meet up with Consorts we already knew and to get to know others we had not met before.
Prior to lunch Carmel McConnell joined us to tell us about her work as founder of Magic Breakfast. Her story was both fascinating and impressive. She discovered that many children in this country, over 500,000 at present and rising, arrive at school too hungry or malnourished. This makes it difficult to concentrate or learn and breakfast at the start of the day makes a big difference.
This is measured as an 80% - 90% improvement in concentration, attainment, alertness, energy levels and behaviour, as reported by a one year study and that translated into a 2 month gain in the children’s performance in the year.
The Charity was formed in 2003 and now provides 40,300 children with breakfasts in 480 partner schools – some with Livery Support.
After lunch we, once again, had a further chance to mingle with our fellow consorts
A most enjoyable event.
