Arkwright Scholars 2018
Arkwright Awards Ceremony: 2018
My first formal role as Master was to attend the Arkwright Awards Ceremony, today, held in the magnificent auditorium in the IET building in Savoy Place, to present the awards to the four apprentices SIM had sponsored, Theodore Mellow, Julia Perotti, Geno Racklin Asher and Hina Raja.
After a chance for sponsors to meet and chat with their sponsored students and their parents, we were lead to the auditorium. Of course I had already met Theo and Hina, since they had accepted our invitation to become Livery Apprentices. Hina was enrolled in October and Theo will be enrolled next April.
After opening remarks from Mike Carr, President of the IET, and Alan Begg, Chairman of Trustees, The Smallpeice Trust, we were given a presentation on behalf of the RAF - the Principle Sponsor - by Julian Young, Air Vice Marshall Royal Air Force.
However, the undisputed highlight of the presentations was from a young lady, Khadijah Ismail, an Arkwright Scholar from 2105. This uplifting and confident presentation, detailing time Khadijah had spent with the RAF and BAE Systems, showed how the scheme and the assignments had developed not just her technical skills, but her self confidence and social skills also.
Unfortunately, upon asking at the end of the ceremony, I found out the event had not been videoed!
After the presentations, some 90 Arkwright Scholars were invited to the stage, with their sponsors in turn, where their personal statements were read out, and their certificates awarded.
With sponsors clled in alphabetical order, as you can imagine, Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers had a long wait for our moment in the spotlight!
An inspiring day with so much young engineering talent around!
