SIM welcomes three new Apprentices
SIM welcomed three new Apprentices into the Company at the February Court.
James, Ukendar and William join us as winners of an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship supported by SIM. The day started with a visit to the Guildhall, where the new Apprentices were 'bound' for a period of four or five years to an Apprentice Master. The ceremony dates back hundreds of years to when young boys would be bound to learn a trade. The ceremony is largly ceremonial now but provides an opportunity for students to be paired with an experienced and knowledgable mentor from the Company who can provide guidance and advice as they continue their studies and embark on their career.
After the visit to the Guildhall, the Apprentices and their parents/guardians returned to the Scientific Instrument Makers' Hall to be admitted to the Company at the Court Meeting.
In addition to the new Apprentices the Company welcomed 2 new Freeman - Alison Ackroyd and Raveena Bhondi.
Finally the Company was delighted to clothe four new Liveryman - Simon Bland; Elizabeth Hall; Derek Hodd and John Saffell.
The Court meeting was followed by a well attended dinner at which New Liveryman Liz Hall delighted the audience with her speech.
It is good to see the Company continuing to grow in its membership in all areas.
