Freeman Bridget Donaldson (who has a degree in Geophysics from the
University of Newcastle) is working at CERN over the Summer, on a
research project concerned with the Hi-Lumi upgrade of the LHC as well
as future feasibility studies for FCC ('the Future Circular Collider'), which
gives her the right to organise a visit for friends, and which she was kind
enough to offer to WCSIM members. Such a visit being high on
members 'bucket lists' meant we had a large response to the invitation for
the 7 places offered us. The Master and the Technical Visit Warden
helped to organise the visit and were given the task of selecting additional
candidates and a 'draw' was held to pick the lucky members who were
then offered places. In all, seven members, four Liverymen and three
Apprentices were able to go on the visit.
On a packed (and very hot day) we were privileged to visit six locations
in the establishment, in a manner not available to the general public, and
not to be repeated for 10 years or so, as once the LHC resumes operation,
nobody is allowed access to the tunnel or detector caverns due to the risk
of radiation contamination.
