The pictured book, lead-authored by Freeman Lucy Hogarth, acknowledges a SIM contribution to the publishing costs.
The book describes the amazing contribution that David Kirkaldy brought to the art of Materials Testing, with a treatise dated 1862. His work is celebrated in The Kirkaldy Museum, situated near our Hall in Southwark Street, of which Lucy is a Trustee, which showcases Kirkaldy's Universal Testing Machine, purportedly one of the largest Scientific Instruments, of its day, ever built!
The machine was used to test the strengths of materials, such as the metals iron and steel, for load bearing and compressive properties.
The book title, at the head of this piece, highlights Kirkaldy's important ethos.
It details the impressively wide impact Kirkaldy's measurements had on ship building and bridge building, encompassing, a world wide reach from HMS Dauntless, via Eads Bridge in Mississipi, Hammersmith and Albert Bridges in London, all the way to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The book copy will be held in the Clerk's office - well worth a read!
