Calling all Members of SIM – Scholars, Apprentices, Freeman and Liverymen!

The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers (WCSIM) announce the launch of a new essay prize. The prize is open to members of both organisations who are in the early stages of their career (typically within 10-15 years of graduation or of commencing relevant employment).

The essay should be a maximum 1000 words and written to be understood by members of the general public.

The title of this year’s essay is:

Innovation and Communication: Scientific Instrumentation Improving Patient Outcomes

A guide to essay writing is available. IPEM and WCSIM will each nominate a judge.

A prize of £500 and an IPEM Gold Medal will be presented to the winner at one of our social events, probably our October banquet, by the President of IPEM and our  Master.

The closing date for entries is Tuesday 15 September.

The winning essay will be published in SCOPE, IPEM’s quarterly magazine, announced in our regular news bulletin and placed on both organisations websites.

IPEM is a professional body, learned society and a charity. The charitable objectives are to advance the application of physics and engineering in medicine for the public benefit and to advance public education in this field. This is fulfilled by supporting and publishing research, the dissemination of knowledge and innovation through project funding and scientific meetings. Additionally, IPEM set the standards for education, training and continuing professional development for healthcare scientists and clinical engineers.

A link between IPEM and WCSIM meets the charitable objectives of both organisations and could be mutually beneficial.
