A message from the Master 2019-20
Welcome to WCSIM
Let me, as Master, give you a very warm welcome to the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers. I am delighted that are visiting this site. I hope that if you decide to join us you will find membership rewarding, interesting and above all enjoyable as you meet regularly with other people who are interested in the craft of scientific instrument making. It is such as broad subject and the Livery involves professionals from all aspects of the craft: be they involved in aspects which include hardware, software, research, education or sales of today’s instrument systems – we represent a key technology of ‘The Internet of Things’ with its interrelated devices and in the smartphone we see an example that everyone has with them all the time.
So while the Livery is topical and links to the most up-to-date devices and systems, we pride ourselves on our links to the traditions of scientific instrument making in the City of London that goes back many centuries. Although we are a ‘modern’ Livery Company, we enjoy that special relationship with the City that Livery Companies have, some going back many centuries. This document will, I hope, provide you with some helpful background to Livery Companies and the mission and purpose of our Livery. Our approach, is seen in our strapline is 'Looking Forward - Giving Back' and I hope that you can see that this chimes well with a company whose craft is so closely linked to innovation today, yet prides itself on the traditions which it upholds.
Above all, I trust you will find the Livery a warm and sociable community of 'like-minded' individuals who you can meet at the various events that we organize and I hope that you will be able to come along to a number of them each year. The Livery is its people, young and old – its Apprentices, Freemen and Liverymen. We are becoming a more diverse group and are welcoming people from across wide variety of backgrounds and seeing more women join us, especially as Apprentices and Freemen, who are the future of the Livery. We have an active Education programme linking to both Schools and Universities and in that way support young people as they study. Over the years that I have been involved, I have met a number of interesting people who have helped and inspired me in my field of instrumentation research and who above all have been friendly and helpful.
I repeat my welcome to you and looking forward to greeting you in person at Livery events in the coming year. Let me encourage you both to enjoy your association with us and take pride in that association.
With good wishes.
